RANCHO DEL CIELO

Three lifelong friends pooled their resources to make a home for themselves in the Salinas Hills, on an old horse ranch. They were drawn to the feel of the old agricultural buildings, and the dramatic native landscape overlooking Monterey Bay.  The program was simple—each friend wants to maintain their autonomy, yet they also come together as a family for meals and communal relaxation. The three individual suites are similar in size, with detail variations that suit their inhabitants.

The shared Great Room is straw bale construction, grand in scale, with tall timber truss ceilings and cozy niches.  The thick walls provide a feeling of solidity, as well as excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. Cozy built in niches also allow the wall to be occupied. Deep window surrounds soften incoming light and prevent glare. Natural earth and lime plaster finishes provide further depth and texture.  The project was built by Skillful Means.
